Coretta Scot King's autobiography

Coretta Scott King, the widow of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in her book, My Life With Martin Luther King, Jr., talks about her earliest Sunday school memories on page 27, "Grandfather Scott would open the Sunday school service by singing a hymn. We had a prayer in the large group--about thirty-five people--then went to our classes, where we were told Bible stories and taught the Catechism."

Later, on page 48, Mrs. King discusses God's plan for us, "I believe that there is a plan and a purpose for each person's life and that there are forces working in the universe to bring about good and to create a community of love and brotherhood. Those who can attune themselves to these forces--to God's purpose--can become instruments of His will."

The passage above reminded me of the Old Testament book of Jeremiah, chapter 29, verse 11, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end." (From the King James Bible)

Bible Study Resource-Back to the Bible

I listened to an 8-week Bible study series this summer on the book of Revelation from the radio program, Back to the Bible.

The transcript of the Revelation series begins at:

I like the fact that this radio show provides a written
transcript of their programs so that I can keep up and later
review the notes.

What God Has Done For Me

The following article was first published in the November 2005 Evangelism Ministry Newsletter of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church:

By Brother Steve Kendall

I recently heard someone say, “God is greater than your barriers.” That phrase is certainly true for me these days. I believe God has a way of getting our attention and drawing us closer to Him through Jesus Christ. After my health failed and I could no longer work full-time, it was God and God alone who helped me to not only cope with these barriers, but He continued to provide for my needs.

So, if you’re reading this and believe your problems are too great for you, pray to Jesus and ask Him to come into your life. He will help you carry your burdens.

Would you like a better, more abundant life?

The following article was first published in the November 2005 Evangelism Ministry Newsletter of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church:

In the New Testament Bible, in the book of John, 10th chapter, 10th verse, Jesus said, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”

Jesus wants you to have a better, more abundant life. Ask Jesus to forgive you of your sins and accept Him into your life.

Mount Moriah Baptist Church wants to help you to become a Spirit-filled, productive Christian.

Great Sermons You Should Check Out

I listen to both Dr. Charles Stanley and Dr. Tony Evans
on the radio Monday - Friday and watch Dr. Stanley on
TV every Sunday.

Both of these pastors, like the senior pastor of my church,
Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, Dr. Lucius M. Dalton, give fantastic,
Spirit-filled sermons. I have yet to hear a sermon from
these men that I didn't like. Their messages often resonate with things going on in my life.

To truly learn more, I take notes on their sermons and
maintain a notebook that I can review.

I encourage you to listen to Dr. Stanley and Dr. Evans online at
the following sites:

Dr. Evans:
http://www.oneplace.com/ministries/the_alternative/Archives.asp

His main site address is: http://www.tonyevans.org/

Dr. Stanley:
http://www.kintera.org/site/c.7nKFISNvEqG/b.1014815/k.873A/InTouch_Radio.htm#

His main site address is: http://www.intouch.org/

As for my pastor, prayerfully, his sermons will be on the Web
in the near future. I'll post an announcement when it happens.

After you listen to Dr. Evans and Dr. Stanley, please
share your thoughts with me.

God bless,

Steve Kendall

How I Spent My Summer Vacation--With Jesus

by Steve Kendall, Witness for Christ/Writer, BibleStudyCafe.com
(First published in the Sept. 2005 edition of the
Mount Moriah Baptist Church newsletter.)

One morning this past summer, while working in my garden, I began to reflect on how God blessed me with the strength and energy to complete a lot of work around my house despite my muscle disease. I was able to paint the exterior of our home, build a gazebo made of bamboo, and many other projects—all made possible by God.

I felt blessed by all of this, but I thought, “What have you done lately to honor and serve God?” It was there, in my garden that I decided to rededicate myself to the Lord in an effort to better serve and obey God.

For several years, I gave the Devil opportunities to defeat me through my health. I would become angry when I didn’t feel well enough to attend church. I began to doubt what I could do physically, as well as mentally, and after awhile, became reluctant to fully participate in serving God.

Since that morning in the garden, I have been blessed with a new joy for life and a greater passion for and understanding of the Bible. And, since that morning in the garden, a series of blessings flowed:

I rejoined the Evangelism Ministry at my church, Mount Moriah Baptist Church, and took my son along as we fed the homeless and was blessed as my son joined the Evangelism Ministry as well.

I once again look forward to attending church and not focusing on my health problems as a barrier to my worship and fellowship experience.

I now pray more often throughout the day and call upon the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit to help me.

I also decided to remove the word “worry” from my vocabulary and instead focus on what Jesus taught the disciples as recounted in Matthew 6:24-34 and again in Luke 12:22-34. I especially try to remember what Jesus told them in Luke 12: 25, “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?”

Other blessings flowed all summer long. Despite a drop in my income by 90%, after leaving full-time teaching due to health problems, God continued to provide for my family, just as He promised.

After ten years of writer’s block, I was finally inspired to finish a series of short stories called, “God’s Glorious Christian Soldiers.” At present, I’m even completing work on my second book—all thanks to God.

As I embark on my next career, that of a writer, I’ve decided to dedicate my work to spreading the Good News and introducing others to Christ. As my pastor, Dr. Lucius Dalton recently told our congregation, the best method to evangelize is by word of mouth. I realize that I certainly need to improve in that area.

I’m a better Christian, husband and father thanks to that garden moment with our Lord. I basically experienced a “spiritual growth spurt” this summer and must thank Jesus daily for that. For without Him, I was truly stumbling along in the dark.

So, whenever the Devil tries to gain a foothold, during a valley day, I will read this article again, to remind myself of God’s awesome mountain experience that awaits each of us.
